INTRODUCTION TO THE SUSSEX DEAF ASSOCIATION
The Sussex Deaf Association was known as the Chichester Church Mission to the Deaf and Dumb to provide spiritual and social welfare for deaf people in Sussex and was founded 1912. In 1934 the Mission became The Sussex Diocesan Association for the Deaf and Dumb and an ordained priest with experience of working with Deaf people was appointed. Later on the word ‘Dumb’ was removed from the title. When the laws changed the Association became registered as a charity in 1969 and relies on the generosity of people to support funding services through Donations, Wills and Legacies.
The people accessing the services include, Profoundly Deaf People, Deafblind People, Hard of Hearing People, and any Hearing Impaired Person in Sussex.
The needs have changed over the years as people’s expectations grow. Hearing Impaired people are now gaining access to services that for many years they have been denied. The hearing world has become more aware of Deaf People in the communities and increasing provision is made to provide loop systems and sign language interpreters to help with access.
The Association offers services throughout Sussex with Brighton being the Headquarters. We have drop-in days for help and advice at various venues in Sussex. The help given includes employment, benefits, pensions, education and home and hospital visits.
The Association also provides facilities for Social Clubs and activities in several venues in Sussex. The facilities include, youth group, senior citizens clubs, activity club and sports and social clubs.
Housebound Deaf people are visited to relieve the isolation and, where possible, transported to the various clubs to meet friends and communication in their own language.
Deaf Awareness training is offered to raise the general public’s knowledge of the needs of Deaf people and help improve the access available to them.
An Advocacy service has recently been set up to empower Deaf people to speak up for themselves and take control of their own lives.
